What is an OSRS private server?

An OSRS private server, or OSRS RSPS, is a fan-run game built on Old School RuneScape: its combat, skills, bosses and look. Old School RuneScape itself grew from a 2007 version of the game, and most OSRS servers follow its newer content too, such as raids and recent bosses. Some copy OSRS closely; many add their own twist on top.

Who it suits

Players who know and like OSRS but want something the official game doesn't give them: faster progress, a fresh economy, a smaller community, or content of the server's own.

What to look for

How up to date the content is, and whether the bosses and raids you care about actually work. How close it stays to OSRS, and how much is custom. XP rates and game modes, such as ironman. Whether people are online at the hours you play. Which clients it offers: download, browser, mobile or RuneLite.

How this list is ranked

Frequently asked questions

Is an OSRS private server linked to my OSRS account? No. It's a separate game run by its own team, not by Jagex, and your account and progress don't carry over.

Can I play an OSRS server on my phone? Some offer a mobile client. See the Mobile RSPS list.

What's the difference between OSRS, pre-EoC and RS3 servers? They copy different eras of RuneScape. OSRS servers follow Old School; pre-EoC servers recreate RuneScape before its 2012 combat change; RS3 servers use the later ability-based combat.
