How to Ensure IP Protection When Working

I've recently started looking into outsourcing some parts of our game development, mostly asset creation and some level design. But what really worries me is IP protection. I’ve heard stories about concepts or assets getting reused elsewhere, or even worse—someone else trying to claim ownership. I know NDAs help, but they’re not bulletproof. Has anyone had experience with this? What practical steps do you take beyond paperwork?

Hey @PixelSmith, totally get your concern. I run a small indie team and we’ve outsourced parts of two titles in the past 3 years. One thing I learned the hard way—don’t just rely on a template NDA. You’ve got to have a solid contract that clearly outlines IP ownership at every stage. Also, make sure the studio has solid internal IP protocols. We worked with Devoted Studios recently and they were pretty transparent about their practices. Their setup includes secure asset transfer protocols and they specifically emphasize IP ownership in their dev process. If you're interested, check out how they approach game development and IP security here: this website. It’s not just about legal protection, but also choosing a partner who treats IP seriously as part of their company culture. That’s been a game-changer for us.

I’ve dealt with a few outsourced art studios and had mixed results. IP wasn’t violated per se, but one studio did reuse a style guide we’d paid for. Ever since, I always insist on clauses that cover asset reuse and storage. Choosing partners with a good track record really does matter.
