Most RuneScape private servers are played through a client you download and install on your computer, often with a launcher that keeps it up to date. A downloaded client usually gives the smoothest experience: the full interface, better performance, and extras such as plugins, resizable mode and HD graphics where the server supports them.

Which operating systems the client supports. Whether it has a launcher that updates itself. Which plugins or graphics options it offers. And above all, where you download it from: only from the server's official website or its official Discord, never from a mirror or a link someone sends you. By votes cast this month. Anyone can vote for a server once every 12 hours, for free and without an account, and the ranking starts over on the 1st. Votes can't be bought, and ads never move a server up the list.
Is it safe to download an RSPS client? From the server's official site, usually yes, but you're trusting that server's team. Check reviews and the server's reputation first.
Does it work on a Mac? Many clients do. Check the server's download page for Mac and Linux versions.
Can I play without downloading? Some servers also have a web client. See the Web client RSPS list.
