Orion RSPS Review

Orion is an Oldschool Runescape server with custom additions. For instance, the entire server revovles around a new overworld called the Kingdom of Orion, where players may travel from the Scarred Lands by the Kogo Jungle to the Grand Burial Grounds to embark on a new adventure. With a goal to resemble the OS experience but grant a new perspective on gameplay, the developers behind this server have crafted a server that feels deeply rooted in nostalgia while remaining refreshingly unpredictable.

Interview

Runelist: Orion positions itself as both deeply customizable and true to Old School RuneScape. What was the original moment or frustration that made you think: “This server needs to exist”?
Orion: We've been interested in creating a full-scale custom world for years now. The project didn't stem from frustration with what was currently available on the market, as much as it did from personal interest.

Runelist: Customization is often associated with power creep, e.g. fighting a monster with 12 billion health. How does Orion ensure that customization enhances player expression without breaking balance or progression?
Orion: Orion primarily relies on OSRS balancing for item stats. So far, the main customization for PVM comes in the way of perks and combat pets, which increase damage and attack speed. These were balanced over the course of months of testing. Additionally, the perks don't apply to PVP.

Runelist: How do you preserve the feeling of meaningful grinds and achievement in a custom environment where you have less space for exploration through journey and adventure?
Orion: Actually, we'd say Orion is extremely large as far as private servers go. It's roughly 10x10 regions (and growing). Most servers utilize very little space. They have a home (typically Edgeville) with teleports to the various hotspots. Orion isn't so different in that regard, but instead of mainly relying on dungeons, we opted to place the majority of our monsters in the overworld itself. This helps to give the world more purpose and feel more alive.

Runelist: From a founder standpoint, what system, model or feature in Orion are each and everyone of you most proud of?
Orion: The team agrees that we're most proud of the custom world. It's one of the things we receive the most compliments about--players enjoy it a lot. Orion has already seen great success, reaching hundreds of players on launch.

Runelist: A year from now, what would make you and the team say: “We succeeded”?
Orion: We've reached #1 on RuLocus and have surpassed 1.5k online, the game is far more popular than we imagined. Though, the real measure of success is probably long term relevance. We'll see how things go!

Notable Features

Player versus Monster (PvM)

Orion offers a vast amount of bosses ranging from beginner to end-game challenges. They have also given it their own touch by introducing bosses such as the Goblin Cook. No matter if you are a beginner PvMer or a hardcore elitist, there's a boss fit for your level. For instance, for newer players there is Obor, Bryophyta Sarachnis and the Goblin Cook, whereas more experienced players can try their luck with The Nightmare and the Gauntlet amongst many others.

Skilling

All skilling locations have been streamlined to act as centralized hubs, which create a greater feeling of community and companionship. Every location has at least ten players training the skill, and they all work identically to the original game. There are nearby banks with sellers for the respective skill in each zone, ensuring that everything you need is near you so that you do not have to put a lot of effort into learning what is where.

PvP

As Orion has an immense player count, finding PvP-action is no problem! Apart from having automated PvP Tournaments, the Wilderness thrives with life. People are fighting each other at Revenants, sniping Wilderness boss killers and hunting for skillers and treasure hunters. The system is also as close to the original game as possible, with all custom additions being disabled in the Wilderness.

Minigames

To keep the world feeling alive, the Orion devs started by building out the most popular minigames first. Right now, that means the lineup is mostly combat-heavy. Only three out of the eleven minigames are dedicated to skilling. You’ll find all the essentials like Raids, Wintertodt, and the Warriors' Guild, but if you’re looking for a wide variety of non-combat activities, the current list might feel a little thin. You might wonder why this section scored so highly, but the answer is in the details. The team has given several minigames, like Barrows, a significant facelift to make these familiar grinds feel fresh and visually engaging again. Rest assured, they are working on adding more minigames to round things out.

Other

Beyond the core combat and skilling activities, Orion’s miscallaneous content is where the server’s unique identity really shines. These systems are designed to bridge the gap between classic Old School gameplay and modern, rewarding progression loops. For instance, Orion solves the "bank clutter" problem with a clever sacrifice mechanic. By breaking down unwanted items, you earn Echo Shards, which can be traded for powerful, character-altering Perks. It’s a satisfying loop that turns every mediocre drop into a stepping stone toward a more efficient build. Finally, the bhe best part about Orion is that it feels like "Home", even though you're exploring a completely new world. The developers have managed to capture that classic OSRS soul. The weight of the combat, the rhythm of the skilling, and placed it into a fresh map that actually rewards curiosity. It’s the rare server that feels authentic without just being a carbon copy of the original game.

Conclusion (4.75 / 5)

Ultimately, Orion succeeds because it doesn’t just replicate Old School RuneScape, it reimagines it. By moving away from the standard "teleport-and-idle" meta and placing its heart within a massive, custom-built overworld, the server manages to recapture that rare sense of wonder and exploration often lost in private servers. With a peak player count exceeding 1,500 and a clear focus on long-term sustainability, Orion is a destination for any player seeking a nostalgic grind in a world that still has secrets left to uncover.
